The story behind Hopes Haven is a simple one. Monica Mills, an ordinary 30-something, spent time volunteering in Ventura County beginning in 2005. This often found her in the homes of families whose children were counting hospital stays and chemo dates rather than vacation time and school
dances. The pure helpless agony the parents suffered was etched in
the shadows of their ever-stoic faces.
Monica felt the heartache of each of these families and hoped for a
way to ease their burden. While looking into resources, it became
apparent that support in Ventura County was lacking. The area
seemed to be lost between the more affluent Santa Barbara and
Los Angeles counties.
Determined to do something, she invited five kids to a red carpet
event in Los Angeles. They beamed while being interviewed by
reporters, photographed by magazines and treated like royalty.
The parents glowed from the sidelines watching their children
have the time of their lives. For one night, these brave warriors
got to experience the joy of childhood and the excitement it
is supposed to offer. These were the roots of Hopes Haven.
In 2008 Monica founded the organization and in 2009 it
received it's official 501(c)3 status.
The name reflects her wish to create a safe place that allows
families and children to hope for a better day and a bright life ahead.
